Town of Lakeville
The
landscape is rustic, with woods and ponds, walking trails and winding roads.
Agriculture was once the town's forte and it has stayed primarily rural, with
an influx of business only recently beginning.
Lakeville boasts the beautiful
Long Pond, which it shares with its neighbor Freetown. Boating, swimming, water
skiing, fishing, skating and camping are popular activities on the pond. Clear
Pond park on Clear Pond offers miniature golfing, a playground, swimming, and
picnicking.
Whether boating across the ponds, embarking on a tour of
historical neighborhoods or simply kicking back around the barbecue on a warm
summer evening, Lakeville is the quintessential example of hometown living.
The summer is an excellent time to be a Lakeville resident. Festivals
and events liven the warm days and nights, especially for the town's youth.
About 500 people, young and old, recently enjoyed kite flying, a fishing derby,
a basketball tournament, arts, crafts, and food at the third annual "A Day in
the Park" at the former Ted Williams Campthe summer baseball camp once
owned by Ted Williams.
Cool Camp at the Freetown-Lakeville Middle
School started just last week. The camp provides a place for children to engage
in arts and crafts, working on computers and cooking from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for
six weeks, with a field trip thrown in each week.
Lakeville has
experienced growth in the past 10 years, due in part to the implementation of
the commuter rail from Boston. According to 2000 census data, Lakeville has
grown 26 percent to 9,821 in the past decade and 336 percent since 1950. The
town has taken a pro-active approach, including development of a Master Plan,
to preserve the town's rural character and small-town feel.
Services Less than 5 percent town water,
no sewer or trash pickup. Private haulers available, trash can be brought to
the transfer station for a fee; $1.25 per bag cost for disposal.
